This brush festival began in 1964 as part of local revitalization efforts. At 2:30 p.m. on January 17, the annual giant-brush dedication procession takes place. A brush about 4 meters long and weighing about 50 kg is placed on a goshosha carriage and pulled from Central Park to Kitano Tenjin Shrine. Young children and adults of yakudoshi ages (ages traditionally considered unlucky in Japan) take part in the procession together.
As the examination season begins, the shrine, which enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, known as a guardian deity of learning, draws many students praying for success in their exams.

内容
この筆まつりは、まちおこしの一環として1964年から始まったもので、17日の午後2時30分からは、恒例の「大筆奉納行列」が行われ、長さ約4m、重さ50kgほどの大筆が御所車に載せられ、中央公園から北野天神社まで引き回されます。幼児から厄年の大人らが一緒になって練り歩きます。
受験シーズンが始まるころでもあり、学問の守り神として知られる「菅原道真公」を祀る同社は多くの合格祈願の受験生らで賑わいます。
